Every Espada in Bleach, Ranked by Actual Strength
Spoiler warning: This post covers the complete Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arcs, including every Espada fight and its outcome. Deaths and resurrección reveals are discussed openly.
The Espada are the ten strongest Arrancar in Aizen's army, each tattooed with a number from 1 to 10 denoting rank. The tidy assumption is that the number is the ranking, and for most of the roster it holds. In two specific places it does not, and those two places are the most interesting thing about the group.
This ranking goes on demonstrated strength: what each Espada did in their fight, who they did it against, and what was required to put them down. Where that disagrees with the tattoo, the disagreement is the entry.
How the numbering actually works
Aizen assigned the numbers himself, and the criterion was not a straight fight between candidates. The number reflects his assessment of each Arrancar's usefulness and raw spiritual pressure at the time of assignment, which creates two distortions.
The first is that the numbering is a snapshot. An Espada who grows after assignment keeps their old number. The second, and the bigger one, is that Aizen weighted destructive capacity heavily, which rewards an Arrancar whose power is enormous and unsubtle over one whose power is efficient. The clearest case is the tenth seat, and we will get to him.
There is also the Número system beneath the Espada, where higher numbers simply mean weaker. Among the Espada themselves, lower is stronger. Zero exists as a classification but sits outside the original ten.
TL;DR
| Rank | Espada | Number | Resurrección | |------|--------|--------|--------------| | #1 | Coyote Starrk | 1 | Los Lobos | | #2 | Baraggan Louisenbairn | 2 | Arrogante | | #3 | Tier Harribel | 3 | Tiburón | | #4 | Ulquiorra Cifer | 4 | Murciélago, and its second stage | | #5 | Yammy Llargo | 10 (0 when released) | Ira | | #6 | Nnoitra Gilga | 5 | Santa Teresa | | #7 | Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez | 6 | Pantera | | #8 | Szayelaporro Granz | 8 | Fornicarás | | #9 | Zommari Rureaux | 7 | Brujería | | #10 | Aaroniero Arruruerie | 9 | Glotonería |
#10: Aaroniero Arruruerie

Aaroniero Arruruerie, Número 9
The only Espada made of thousands of absorbed Hollows rather than a single evolved one, housed in a tank as two heads sharing one body. Glotonería lets him consume Hollows and take their abilities, which in principle is one of the most scalable powers in the series.
In practice he is the weakest of the ten by a clear margin, and the series is explicit that he only holds a seat because of his utility for infiltration. He fights Rukia using a stolen form and a stolen technique, wins the psychological half of the fight completely, and still loses to a lieutenant-grade opponent who had not yet reached her bankai. No other Espada loses to someone that far below them.
#9: Zommari Rureaux

Zommari Rureaux, Número 7
The fastest Espada by his own account, using Sonído to generate multiple afterimages. His resurrección, Brujería, covers him in eyes, and anything an eye looks at comes under his direct control, limb by limb if necessary.
Amor is a genuinely dangerous ability and he uses it well, seizing control of Rukia and then of Byakuya's own limbs. The problem is what happens next: Byakuya simply works around it, and the fight ends quickly once the trick is understood. Zommari ranks above Aaroniero because his opponent was a captain rather than a lieutenant, and below everyone else because that captain was never in serious danger.
#8: Szayelaporro Granz

Szayelaporro Granz, Número 8
The Espada scientist, and the one whose threat has nothing to do with his combat ability. Fornicarás lets him absorb an opponent and create voodoo replicas of their internal organs, crushing them from outside the body. He also resurrects himself indefinitely through his Fracción, which makes him functionally unkillable by normal means.
He dismantles Renji and Uryū, then takes apart Nemu, and his power set is arguably the most unpleasant in the arc. He ranks eighth because the moment he meets someone who prepares better than he does, the whole structure collapses. Mayuri had poisoned himself years in advance against exactly this kind of ability, and Szayelaporro's defeat is less a fight than a demonstration that his advantage only works on people who have not thought about him.
#7: Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez

Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, Número 6
The most aggressive Espada and the one with the most screen time against Ichigo. Pantera is a straightforward speed and power release with Desgarrón as its finisher, five enormous claws of condensed spiritual energy that Grimmjow calls his strongest attack.
His record is better than his placement suggests and that is the honest tension in this entry. He pushes Ichigo harder than anyone below Ulquiorra, and their final fight is close enough that it takes Ichigo's Hollow mask at full strength to settle it. He ranks seventh because he loses to Ichigo twice and is then cut down by Nnoitra immediately afterwards, which is a hard ceiling applied by a fellow Espada.
#6: Nnoitra Gilga

Nnoitra Gilga, Número 5
The Espada with the highest Hierro in the group, which the series states outright. Santa Teresa gives him six arms and six scythes, and his entire approach is built on being impossible to wound rather than on technique.
He goes through Chad, then Nel, then fights Kenpachi Zaraki in one of the longest Espada fights in the arc. Zaraki beats him, but only after an extended exchange in which Nnoitra takes damage that would have ended anyone ranked below him and keeps standing. He ranks sixth rather than higher because durability without a win condition eventually loses to someone who also cannot be hurt and hits harder.
#5: Yammy Llargo

Yammy Llargo, Número 10, and Número 0 when released
This is the place where the numbering comes apart most visibly, and it is deliberate on Aizen's part rather than an error.
Yammy carries a 10 tattoo, the lowest rank in the group, and spends most of the arc being treated as a thug. On release, the 10 becomes a 0: Ira converts his rage directly into size and power, escalating the longer he fights, and he is reclassified as the Espada Cero. His released form dwarfs everything else in Hueco Mundo and takes the combined attention of multiple captains.
The reason the number is misleading is that Aizen ranked him on his sealed state. Yammy's power is almost entirely locked behind his resurrección in a way no other Espada's is, so his baseline assessment was accurate and his ceiling was not reflected in it. He ranks fifth here rather than first because raw escalating mass is a blunt instrument: he is slow, undisciplined, and the captains who face him treat him as an obstacle rather than a serious threat to their lives.
#4: Ulquiorra Cifer

Ulquiorra Cifer, Número 4
The only Espada with a second resurrección stage, and the one who gets closest to the series' central themes. Murciélago gives him flight, regeneration and Lanza del Relámpago; Segunda Etapa goes somewhere else entirely, and Aizen was unaware it existed.
His feat list is the strongest in the arc below the top three. He defeats Ichigo twice, the second time by putting a hole through his chest and effectively killing him, which is the single most decisive thing any Espada achieves. What finally beats him is not a sorcerer or a captain but Ichigo's Hollow transformation, an entity operating outside the rules the fight had established.
He ranks fourth rather than higher on a technicality that matters: the three above him have power on a scale he does not match, and his number reflects that accurately. His placement is the clearest case of the tattoo being correct.
#3: Tier Harribel

Tier Harribel, Número 3
The Espada of sacrifice, and the only one in the top three who commands genuine loyalty rather than fear. Tiburón gives her water manipulation at scale, Hirviendo for superheated attacks and La Gota and Cascada as finishers, with a hollow mask fragment covering most of her face.
She fights Hitsugaya in Fake Karakura Town and has the better of the exchange throughout, holding a captain at arm's length and forcing him to escalate repeatedly. The fight does not end because she loses it: Aizen cuts her down from behind, mid-fight, as a demonstration of indifference to his own forces.
That makes her the hardest Espada to assess, because her defeat tells you nothing about her ceiling. She ranks third on the strength of a performance against a captain that was still going her way when it was interrupted. For how Hitsugaya himself places, the Gotei 13 captains ranked works through the other side of these fights.
#2: Baraggan Louisenbairn

Baraggan Louisenbairn, Número 2
The former King of Hueco Mundo, displaced by Aizen and serving under protest. Arrogante releases Respira, an aura of accelerated time that ages and rots anything it touches, including attacks aimed at him and the ground he stands on.
Respira is arguably the most broken ability in the arc, because it does not need to beat a defence; it decays it. He destroys Soi Fon's arm, dismantles her squad, and renders conventional attacks useless by rotting them in flight. Her bankai, a missile designed to kill in one hit, ages to dust before reaching him.
What kills him is his own power turned back on him, which is the only route available. He ranks second because nothing in the arc counters Respira directly, and first place goes to the Espada whose strength required Aizen to limit how much of it was ever used.
#1: Coyote Starrk

Coyote Starrk, Número 1
The Primera, and the only Espada whose origin explains his power rather than the other way around. Starrk was so strong as a Hollow that everything near him died from proximity to his spiritual pressure, and the loneliness that caused made him split his own soul in two. Lilynette is the other half.
Los Lobos arms him with twin pistols and a wolf pack of energy constructs, each capable of a Cero. He fights Kyōraku, Love and Rose simultaneously and holds all three, and Kyōraku is among the strongest captains in the Gotei 13. The fight only ends when Kyōraku's shikai turns a game's rules against him.
He is first because of the disjunction between his power and his disposition. Starrk does not want to fight, holds back persistently, and is still the hardest Espada for the Gotei 13 to put down. Aizen's number is right here, and it is right for a reason the number itself cannot convey: the Primera's ceiling was never fully shown, because its owner was never fully willing.
Where the number and the strength disagree
Two entries, and they fail in opposite directions.
Yammy is the famous one. A 10 that becomes a 0 on release is the most dramatic gap in the group, but it is a quirk of assessment rather than a mistake: Aizen graded a sealed state, and Yammy is the only Espada whose power lives almost entirely behind his release. Even then, the 0 overstates him in practice. He is ranked fifth here because escalating mass without speed or technique is beatable by anyone with both.
Harribel fails the other way, and her case is subtler. Her number is probably accurate, but her defeat is worthless as evidence because Aizen ended the fight himself while she was winning it. Any ranking that reads her loss as a measure of her strength is reading the wrong thing.
Everyone else lines up with their tattoo reasonably well, which is the quiet argument for Aizen's judgement. The system is not arbitrary. It is a snapshot taken by someone with a specific definition of useful, and it holds up for eight of ten.
Closing
Starrk is the strongest and the least interested in being so. Baraggan has the ability nothing in the arc answers. Ulquiorra gets closer to killing the protagonist than anyone else. And the tenth seat turning into the zeroth is the one piece of the hierarchy that the hierarchy itself could not express.
For the opposing side of these fights, every Gotei 13 captain ranked covers the Soul Reapers on the same demonstrated-feats basis.
