Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, Explained (Do You Need to Watch Season 1?)
No, you do not need to watch season 1. Edgerunners 2 is a standalone story with an entirely new cast, set in the same city. You can start here.
That is the question most people are asking, so it goes first. The longer answer, and the reasons you might want to watch the original anyway, are below.
Do you need season 1?
Not for the plot. The two seasons share a setting and nothing else: no returning protagonists, no continuing storyline, no cliffhanger being resolved. Night City is the connective tissue, and the show explains the city as it goes, the same way the original did for viewers who had never touched the game.
There are two reasons to watch the original anyway, and neither is obligation.
The first is that it is excellent, and it is only ten episodes. It is a complete, self-contained tragedy that many people rate among the best anime of the decade.
The second is tonal calibration. Edgerunners established what this version of Night City does to people who try to rise in it, and that expectation is the lens the new season will be viewed through. Watching the original is not a prerequisite so much as a primer on how much the show is willing to hurt.

What season 1 was
Ten episodes following David Martinez, a teenager who loses everything and falls into mercenary work, and Lucy, a netrunner with a plan to get out. It is a complete story with a definite ending, which is unusual for a tie-in and is most of why it worked.
Nothing in it is required reading for the new season. If you intend to watch both, watch it first; if you only want one, the new one stands alone by design.
Do you need the game?
No. Cyberpunk 2077 and Edgerunners share a world, a developer relationship and a city, but the anime has never required game knowledge. The original worked as an entry point for people who had never played, and CD Projekt Red's involvement is about world consistency rather than plot dependency.
Playing the game will make certain locations, brands and bits of slang land faster. It will not change whether you follow the story.
What the new season is
A new ten-episode standalone story with an all-new crew, set in Night City. All ten episodes drop at once on 20 October 2026 on Netflix.

Night City
The one genuine continuity between seasons. A corporate-run sprawl where cybernetic augmentation is routine, the gap between the towers and the street is absolute, and pushing your body past what it can carry leads somewhere specific and bad.
The setting does most of the thematic work in this franchise. The stories are about people trying to climb, and the city is the thing that decides how far they get.
Beyond that, this guide stops. Official marketing has been deliberately light on plot, and there is no value in speculating about characters and arcs that have not been shown. What is confirmed is the shape: new crew, standalone, ten episodes, same city.
Who is making it
| Role | Credit | |------|--------| | Studio | Trigger | | Director | Kai Ikarashi | | Writer, producer, showrunner | Bartosz Sztybor | | Scriptwriter | Masahiko Otsuka | | Character designer | Ichigo Kanno | | Partner | CD Projekt Red |
Two names matter most for continuity of feel. Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, having held the same role on the original, which is the strongest signal that the new season is pursuing the same register rather than a reinvention. Kai Ikarashi steps up to director having worked on the first season, so the visual language is coming from inside the original production rather than from a new hire.
Trigger returning is the other half of it. The studio's style, the kinetic animation and the colour, was inseparable from why the original landed, and keeping it removes the main risk a sequel of this kind usually carries.
Where to watch
Netflix, worldwide, from 20 October 2026. All ten episodes at once rather than weekly, as with the original.
This is one of the few titles this season with no regional complication: Netflix holds it globally, so UK viewers get it the same day as everyone else.
Closing
The short version: start wherever you like. The new season asks nothing of you, the original is ten hours well spent if you want it, and the game is optional in both directions. The people who made the first one are making this one, which is the most reassuring fact available about it.
