Every Goku Transformation, Ranked (All Forms Explained)
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus premieres October 11, 2026, marking Dragon Ball's return to television with a fully reconstructed version of the Beerus Saga. That makes this a good time to work through every canon Goku transformation with a clear head, because most existing lists get two things wrong: they rank by stated multipliers rather than demonstrated output, and they treat anime-only and manga-only forms interchangeably without flagging which is which.
This post ranks by combat output only. What did each form actually accomplish against the opponents it faced? A form that exists only to be defeated by the next power-up ranks lower than one that won decisive fights. The multiplier chain broke down after the Cell Saga for reasons worth addressing directly in a separate section below. All 12 entries are from the canon Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super continuity. GT forms are addressed in prose at the end.
TL;DR

#12: Base Goku

Base Form
First appearance: Dragon Ball, Chapter 1 / Episode 1 | Trigger: None | Media: Anime and manga
Base Goku's power scales with the series across every saga, from child Goku who struggled with the Pilaf Gang to Dragon Ball Super-era Goku whose untransformed state already exceeds anything in the original Dragon Ball Z by orders of magnitude. Base form is listed last not because it is weak in absolute terms but because every other entry on this list is an augmentation of it.
Drawback: None. Base form is the sustainable state. Every transformation above it introduces a cost. Strongest demonstrated feat at base: Goku's base in the Tournament of Power was enough to fight competitively against most Universe 7 and Universe 6 fighters before transforming, suggesting it sits somewhere above the lower end of SS-class from the Frieza Saga era.
#11: Great Ape

Great Ape (Oozaru)
First appearance: Dragon Ball, vs the Pilaf forces (Chapter 54 / Episode 13) | Trigger: Full moon or artificial blutz waves while the Saiyan's tail is intact | Media: Anime and manga
The original Saiyan transformation. A Saiyan with their tail intact absorbs 17 million zeno units of blutz waves from a full moon or equivalent source and transforms into a giant ape. Power multiplies tenfold. Rational thought is lost unless specifically trained. Goku lost his tail multiple times and eventually permanently, removing access to this form entirely by the mid-Z era.
Drawback: Requires the tail, which is a permanent vulnerability. Loss of the tail permanently removes Great Ape access. The form is also tactically limited: massive size means slower targeting, and an opponent who can stay at range or sever the tail again wins. Strongest feat: Goku as a child in Great Ape form wiped out the Red Ribbon Army's fortress. In the Z era, the form is superseded entirely by Super Saiyan before any meaningful opponent encounters it.
#10: Kaioken

Kaioken
First appearance: DBZ, Saiyan Saga (Episode 28 / Chapter 214, vs Nappa and Vegeta) | Trigger: Willful activation of a technique taught by King Kai on Snake Way | Media: Anime and manga
Kaioken is a technique, not a transformation, but it functions as one: it multiplies Goku's power, speed, and energy output by a stated factor. Goku used x2 and x3 against Vegeta, pushed to x4 when Vegeta transformed into a Great Ape, and later used x10 and x20 against Frieza on Namek. The technique is not a Saiyan-exclusive power-up; it was King Kai's personal technique and theoretically teachable to anyone. Goku is the only character to use it meaningfully in combat.
Drawback: Each multiplier level puts proportional strain on the body. Goku at Kaioken x4 was already exceeding his safe limit. At x20 vs Frieza, he was risking permanent physical damage and could not sustain it. Strongest demonstrated feat: Kaioken x20 pushed Frieza to 50% of his total power on Namek, suggesting Goku was in the same rough power tier as 50% Frieza at that multiplier. After the Frieza Saga, Kaioken is effectively retired until it returns stacked on Super Saiyan Blue in Dragon Ball Super.
#9: Super Saiyan

Super Saiyan
First appearance: DBZ, Frieza Saga (Episode 95 / Chapter 317, Namek) | Trigger: Extreme emotional distress combined with sufficient S-cell count; Goku triggered it at Krillin's death by Frieza | Media: Anime and manga
The transformation that defined the franchise. Golden hair, green eyes, golden aura with lightning arcs, a noticeable increase in muscle tension and presence. The original Saiyan legend described it as a once-in-a-millennium transformation; by the Buu Saga it is Gohan and Goten's resting state. Goku's Super Saiyan form defeated 50% Frieza convincingly. In the Cell Saga, mastered Super Saiyan (the Full Power SS variant) became Goku and Gohan's training baseline: hair remains golden but the aura is suppressed to near-nothing, eliminating the constant ki leak.
Drawback: The original form continuously leaks ki, which was the premise for the Full Power variant. The emotional trigger is unreliable in manufactured circumstances. Strongest feat: SS Goku forced 100% Frieza into a stalemate after Frieza killed Krillin; Frieza at 100% was noticeably weaker than at 50% due to power output exceeding his body's structural limits. In that context, SS Goku was dominant.
#8: Super Saiyan 2

Super Saiyan 2
First appearance: DBZ, Cell Saga (Episode 184 / Chapter 388 -- Gohan was first, not Goku) | Trigger: Surpassing the Super Saiyan ceiling through extreme emotional drive | Media: Anime and manga
Gohan unlocked Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Games under the pressure of Cell's attacks on the other fighters. Goku demonstrated it later in the Majin Buu Saga. Visually it is similar to Super Saiyan but with pronounced lightning arcs in the aura and a slight shift in hair shape. Stated multiplier over SS1 is x2. In practice, SS2 Cell was overwhelmed by SS2 Gohan, and SS2 Goku was roughly matched by SS2 Majin Vegeta in the Buu arc.
Drawback: Greater ki consumption than SS1. Goku rarely uses SS2 as a sustained form once SS3 is available; the form is primarily a mid-tier stepping stone. Strongest feat for Goku specifically: SS2 Goku vs Majin Vegeta (Episode 229) is the clearest showcase: two characters at equivalent power fighting to exhaustion. Neither dominated decisively, which establishes the form's tier as roughly matched against Buu Saga SS2-class opponents.
#7: Super Saiyan 3

Super Saiyan 3
First appearance: DBZ, Majin Buu Saga (Episode 245 / Chapter 474, Goku vs Fat Buu) | Trigger: Pushing past the SS2 ceiling; Goku developed this while dead in Other World, where the absence of a living body's physical limitations allowed him to sustain it | Media: Anime and manga
SS3 is the most visually dramatic of the numerical Super Saiyan forms: long golden hair reaching below the waist, eyebrows disappear, the aura is massive. The transformation sequence alone is memorable for how long it takes. The stated multiplier is a further x4 over SS2. In actual combat, SS3 Goku dominated Fat Buu for a brief period but deliberately held back to give Trunks and Goten time to fuse. His real SS3 ceiling was demonstrated vs Beerus in Dragon Ball Super: SS3 Goku took two hits from Beerus at roughly 70% power and was knocked unconscious.
Drawback: The stamina drain is severe and well-documented in the story itself. Goku explicitly warns that SS3 costs him time on Earth during the Buu arc. While living, he cannot maintain it for more than a few minutes. Even in the afterlife, sustained SS3 depletes his spiritual energy. In Dragon Ball Super, the form is used once against Beerus and never again in serious combat. Strongest feat: Briefly pressured Fat Buu, though he was holding back. Against Beerus, SS3 was decisively insufficient.
#6: Super Saiyan God

Super Saiyan God
First appearance: DBS, Beerus Saga (DBS Episode 11 / Battle of Gods film, 2013) | Trigger: A ritual in which five pure-hearted Saiyans pour their ki into a sixth simultaneously; after the Beerus fight, Goku absorbs SSG ki into his base and can re-access the form through trained will | Media: Anime and manga
Super Saiyan God is the first form that crosses into divine ki. Visually: slimmer build than other SS forms, red hair, red aura, red eyes. The form is quieter than the lightning-and-noise of SS1 through SS3; divine ki manifests as warmth rather than electrical discharge. Goku's SSG fight with Beerus in the Battle of Gods arc reached the point where both combatants' ki collisions threatened to destroy the universe; Beerus himself acknowledged Goku was the only mortal in Universe 7 to push him that far. After absorbing SSG ki, base Goku's ceiling effectively sits at SSG-class, making the form redundant in most contexts.
Drawback: The original ritual requirement was a significant logistical constraint. After absorption, it becomes a standard accessible form but is outclassed by SSB. Strongest feat: Goku in SSG forced Beerus to use a reported 70% of his power. Beerus is a God of Destruction; SSG Goku reaching that threshold puts it decisively above anything from the Z era.
#5: Super Saiyan Blue

Super Saiyan Blue (SSGSS)
First appearance: DBS, Revival of F arc (DBS Episode 21 / Resurrection F film, 2015) | Trigger: Applying the Super Saiyan transformation on top of an SSG base; divine ki and Saiyan evolution stacked simultaneously | Media: Anime and manga
Super Saiyan Blue is the primary combat form for both Goku and Vegeta through most of Dragon Ball Super. Blue hair, blue aura, blue eyes, same hair shape as SS1. The form represents the combination of a mortal's emotional Saiyan power with the calm ki of a god. SSB Goku defeated Golden Frieza in the Revival of F arc; Golden Frieza's stamina drained before SSB Goku's, making the fight shorter than it might otherwise have been. Through the Universe 6 and Future Trunks arcs, SSB is Goku and Vegeta's default ceiling before further augmentation.
Drawback: Original SSB has a significant ki leakage problem: the blue aura constantly vents divine ki, meaning the form is less efficient than it appears. Each individual use of SSB is somewhat weaker than the last if used repeatedly in the same fight. This is the flaw that Perfected SSB addresses in the manga, and that Kaioken overrides in the anime by accepting and weaponising the cost. Strongest feat: SSB Goku vs Hit in the Universe 6 Tournament is the clearest benchmark: competitive against Hit's full time-skip ability in their final bout.
#4: Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken

Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken
First appearance: DBS anime, Universe 6 arc Tournament (Episode 39, vs Hit) | Trigger: Layering Kaioken on top of an active SSB state; requires precise ki control to prevent the body from tearing itself apart | Media: ANIME ONLY. The manga uses Perfected Super Saiyan Blue at this power tier instead.
SSB Kaioken is conceptually absurd: Kaioken works by multiplying output beyond what the body can safely sustain, while SSB already requires perfect divine ki control to activate. Stacking them should be impossible. Goku makes it work by using SSB's ki control to stabilise the Kaioken multiplier inside the divine ki framework. The base version (x10) gave Goku enough output to defeat Hit by locking his time-skip. The x20 version was deployed against Jiren in the Tournament of Power and represents the peak of this form's demonstrated power. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus (2026) confirms SSB Kaioken will appear in the enhanced remake's Tournament of Destroyers arc.
Drawback: The physical cost is severe. After SSBKKx10 vs Hit, Goku's body was visibly damaged and his ki was erratic. After x20 vs Jiren, Goku was unable to fight further. The form cannot be sustained; it is a spike, not a ceiling. Strongest feat: SSBKKx20 pushed Jiren in the Tournament of Power back significantly, though Jiren had not yet revealed his full power. It is the last form before Ultra Instinct in the anime continuity.
#3: Perfected Super Saiyan Blue

Perfected Super Saiyan Blue
First appearance: DBS manga, Universe 6 arc (Chapters 24-25, vs Hit and later Zamasu) | Trigger: Mastering SSB by internalising all divine ki completely; no aura is visible in this state | Media: MANGA ONLY. This form does not appear in the DBS anime.
Perfected SSB solves the ki leakage problem of standard SSB by containing all godly ki within the body. No aura is visible. The form looks identical to base Goku or a calm SSB user; opponents cannot gauge the power output from visual cues alone. The internal containment means no energy is wasted, making Perfected SSB significantly more powerful than standard SSB for the same energy expenditure. In the manga, this is the form Goku uses against Fused Zamasu at full capacity and later in the Tournament of Power before Ultra Instinct triggers.
Drawback: Requires sustained mental calm and focus. Emotional disruption breaks the internal containment. The form can also only be used a limited number of times per combat at full effectiveness: each transition in and out of Perfected SSB degrades the quality of the next use slightly. Strongest feat: Manga Goku in Perfected SSB challenged Fused Zamasu alone, whereas both Goku and Vegeta in standard SSB had been overpowered by Zamasu. The upgrade between standard and perfected is substantial, not incremental.
#2: Ultra Instinct Sign

Ultra Instinct Sign (Incomplete)
First appearance: DBS, Tournament of Power (Anime Episode 110 / Manga Chapter 39, vs Jiren) | Trigger: Extreme crisis; Goku's Spirit Bomb was deflected back onto him. The explosion forced his body to move without conscious thought, which is the base condition for Ultra Instinct. Not willfully activated in its first use. | Media: Anime and manga (with different specific triggers)
Ultra Instinct is not a power-up in the traditional sense. It is a technique-state: the body reacts and moves autonomously, bypassing the delay between thought and action. Even gods struggle to master it. Whis trains Beerus and Goku toward it; Beerus has not achieved it. In the Sign state, Goku's defensive movement is fully autonomous but his offensive instinct remains incomplete. He must still think through attacks. Silver-white aura, silver eyes, dark hair with silver sheen, calm expression that contrasts with the intensity of the fight around him.
Drawback: Unstable. Ki drains rapidly in Sign state. Goku's body temperature increases dangerously; prolonged use risks destroying him from within. The offensive incompleteness means Jiren at high power could withstand Sign-state strikes even when he could not reliably hit Goku back. Strongest feat: UI Sign Goku held off Jiren at roughly three-quarters power in the anime. In the manga, Sign-state Goku defeated Kefla, whose fused power exceeded the entire rest of Universe 6's fighters combined.
#1: Mastered Ultra Instinct

Mastered Ultra Instinct (MUI)
First appearance: DBS, Tournament of Power (Anime Episode 129 / Manga Chapter 43, vs Jiren) | Trigger: Breaking through the mental limitation that held UI Sign incomplete; triggered by hearing Roshi, Krillin, and the others cheering through the pain. Goku's offensive instinct completes. | Media: Anime and manga
Mastered Ultra Instinct is the completion of what Sign began. Both offensive and defensive movement are now fully autonomous; Goku does not think about fighting while in this state. His expression is calm even against the strongest opponent in the Tournament of Power. White-silver hair, bright silver aura, silver eyes. In the anime, MUI Goku overwhelmed Jiren past the point where Jiren had surpassed his own limits, forcing Jiren to his absolute maximum output before Goku's body gave out. In the manga, MUI Goku pushed Jiren to the edge and eventually won on ring-out terms alongside Android 17.
Drawback: Goku cannot access MUI at will consistently as of the end of Dragon Ball Super. The body's temperature crisis that began in UI Sign continues; at full MUI, Goku's body was breaking apart and would have destroyed itself in the anime had the tournament not ended when it did. Post-DBS, Goku uses MUI briefly in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film (2022) against Cell Max. In the ongoing manga continuity, Goku has been training toward stable on-demand access. Strongest feat: MUI Goku vs Jiren at full power in the anime Tournament of Power. Jiren at his absolute limit, having already exceeded his previously stated ceiling, was dominated by MUI Goku until the physical cost made continuing impossible.
Why the GT forms are excluded
Dragon Ball GT (1996-1997) introduced Super Saiyan 4 and the Golden Great Ape, two visually distinctive transformations that built a significant fanbase. They are not on this list because GT was not written by Akira Toriyama, is not considered canon in the Dragon Ball Super continuity, and Toei Animation has never integrated the GT power structure into the current timeline. Dragon Ball Super contradicts GT's premise directly: Dragon Ball Super's ending with the Tournament of Power and the Ultra Instinct arc would require a complete power-scaling reset to fit SS4 into the current hierarchy.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus (October 2026) and the planned subsequent remakes (Frieza, Universe 6, Goku Black, Jiren arcs) are Toei's current active continuation. Daima (2024) is a separate Toriyama-originated story. Neither includes SS4 or any GT-era elements. GT forms are excluded on the same grounds as the non-Toriyama Dragon Ball movies and filler arcs: real output for this ranking requires a shared canon to measure against.
If you want the GT-era ranking as its own separate exercise, that is a defensible project. Mixing GT and Super in the same list produces a ranking that cannot hold together, because the two series do not share a power scale.
Why power multipliers stopped being meaningful after the Cell Saga
Dragon Ball Z up to the Cell Saga operated on an explicit multiplier model. Kaioken had stated x values. Super Saiyan was described as 50x base by the Daizenshuu guidebooks (a figure that Toriyama himself gave). Super Saiyan 2 was x2 over SS1; SS3 was x4 over SS2. The chain was followable.
The problem was mathematical: if base Goku at the Cell Games was approximately equal to Perfect Cell (who could challenge SS2 Gohan), then each multiplier upward produced numbers with no real-world anchor. By the time Dragon Ball Super arrived, applying the old multiplier chain to SSB would produce power figures in the quintillions relative to Z-era fighters. The numbers became meaningless fiction.
Toriyama stopped issuing multipliers after the Cell Saga for exactly this reason. Super Saiyan God has no stated multiplier. SSB has no stated multiplier. Ultra Instinct is explicitly described as a technique beyond power measurement. The Tournament of Power operates on narrative logic rather than arithmetic: Jiren "surpassed his own limits," Goku "broke his shell," these are emotional and thematic descriptors, not numbers.
This is not a failing of the writing; it is an acknowledgement that power scaling at this level is better expressed through what characters accomplish than through multiplication chains. A ranking built on demonstrated feats is more honest than one built on x50 and x2 compounded across 30 years of publication. That is the methodology this post uses.
Closing
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus launches October 11, 2026, covering the Beerus Saga in a six-episode reconstructed format before continuing through the Frieza and Universe 6 arcs. That arc introduces Super Saiyan God for the first time in the remake and, according to confirmed trailers, includes SSB Kaioken in the Tournament of Destroyers arc.
For power-scaling arguments in other series with their own transformation hierarchies: every JJK cursed technique ranked applies the same demonstrated-output methodology to Jujutsu Kaisen, and the strongest Devil Fruits in One Piece ranked does the same for the One Piece universe. Both lists make the same case against pure nominal ranking.
If you want a completed-anime catch-up list while the DBS: Beerus arc is airing: the best completed anime to binge watch (2026 edition) has the shortlist sorted by realistic time commitment.
