The Strongest Black Clover Characters, Ranked

Black CloverPower Rankings

Spoiler scope: Anime only, episodes 1 to 170, plus the 2023 film. Nothing from the manga beyond what the anime adapted is used here, including for the Dark Triad. Safe to read in premiere week.

Black Clover's power system runs on mana, and almost everyone in it is sorted by how much they were born with. A mage's grimoire arrives at fifteen and sets the ceiling: the number of leaves on the cover signals rarity, and the magic attribute inside, fire, water, wind, dark, light and the rest, decides what they can actually do with it. Above a certain level, mages gain Mana Zone, which turns the surrounding air into usable mana and roughly doubles the scale of what they can cast.

Then there is Asta, who has no mana at all and whose anti-magic cancels spells rather than casting them, which makes him unrankable by the normal measure and is exactly why he is interesting. Devil Union, the fusion form between a host and the devil in their grimoire, is the other thing that breaks the ladder, and both the Dark Triad and Asta reach it in different ways. This ranking is ordered by what each character has actually been shown doing in the anime, not by reputation or by what the manga went on to establish.

TL;DR

| Rank | Character | Affiliation | Key ability | |------|-----------|-------------|-------------| | #1 | Julius Novachrono | Wizard King, Clover Kingdom | Time Magic | | #2 | Licht | Elf Tribe | Light and Sword Magic | | #3 | Zenon Zogratis | Dark Triad, Spade Kingdom | Bone and Spatial Magic | | #4 | Mereoleona Vermillion | Crimson Lions | Fire Magic, Mana Zone mastery | | #5 | Patri | Elf Tribe | Light Magic | | #6 | Yami Sukehiro | Black Bulls captain | Dark Magic | | #7 | Asta | Black Bulls | Anti-Magic, Devil Union | | #8 | Dante Zogratis | Dark Triad, Spade Kingdom | Body and Gravity Magic | | #9 | Fuegoleon Vermillion | Crimson Lions captain | Fire Magic, Salamander | | #10 | Yuno | Golden Dawn | Wind Magic, Spirit Dive | | #11 | William Vangeance | Golden Dawn captain | World Tree Magic | | #12 | Nozel Silva | Silver Eagles captain | Mercury Magic | | #13 | Charlotte Roselei | Blue Rose captain | Briar Magic | | #14 | Noelle Silva | Black Bulls | Water Magic, Valkyrie Dress |

#14: Noelle Silva

Noelle Silva, Black Bulls, Water Magic in Black Clover

Noelle Silva

Royalty by birth and the Silva family's outcast, Noelle begins the series unable to control her own water magic at all. The arc the anime gives her is the most complete growth curve in the cast: from a mage who could not aim, to Sea Dragon's Roar, to Valkyrie Dress, a full-body mana armour that turns her from a support caster into a frontline one. By the time skip she is training in the Heart Kingdom and operating well above where she started.

She ranks last here purely because this is a list of the series' heaviest hitters and she is the only one on it still visibly climbing. Her raw mana pool is enormous, which is why the ceiling is high, but the anime has not yet put her in a fight she wins against anyone else on this list. Ranked on demonstrated results, not potential.

#13: Charlotte Roselei

Charlotte Roselei, Blue Rose captain, Briar Magic in Black Clover

Charlotte Roselei

Captain of the Blue Rose Knights and a Briar Magic user, Charlotte fights by generating thorned vines that bind, crush and shield in the same motion. Being a Magic Knight captain at all puts her in the top fraction of a percent of mages in the Clover Kingdom, and her control is precise enough to restrain opponents the rest of her squad cannot touch.

She places here because the anime gives her less to do than any other captain on this list. Her strongest sequences come during the Elf Reincarnation arc, where she performs capably without ever getting the solo showcase that Mereoleona, Fuegoleon and Yami all receive. A genuine captain-tier mage with the thinnest highlight reel of the captains ranked.

#12: Nozel Silva

Nozel Silva, Silver Eagles captain, Mercury Magic in Black Clover

Nozel Silva

Captain of the Silver Eagles, head of House Silva and Noelle's eldest brother. Mercury Magic is one of the better-designed attributes in the series: liquid metal that shifts between armour, restraints and high-velocity projectiles without needing a change of stance, and his Silver Rain and mercury barriers protect allies as readily as they attack.

Nozel is a complete, disciplined captain who consistently performs at the level the rank implies. He ranks above Charlotte on volume of demonstrated combat and below Fuegoleon because he lacks a decisive solo win against a top-tier opponent in the anime's run. Reliable rather than explosive.

#11: William Vangeance

William Vangeance, Golden Dawn captain, World Tree Magic in Black Clover

William Vangeance

Captain of the Golden Dawn, the Clover Kingdom's most decorated squad, and the holder of World Tree Magic, which grows enormous trees capable of healing allies across a battlefield or constricting an entire enemy force. On paper he is one of the two or three strongest Magic Knights in the kingdom and Julius's personal pick for a successor.

The anime complicates that in two ways. His body spent the Elf Reincarnation arc shared with Patri, which makes separating William's own output from the elf's genuinely difficult. And in the Spade Kingdom's opening strike he is beaten and taken by Zenon in a fight that is not close. Ranked here on the strength of the capability shown, with the loss that caps it noted honestly.

#10: Yuno

Yuno, Golden Dawn, Wind Magic and Spirit Dive in Black Clover

Yuno

Asta's rival, raised in the same church, handed a four-leaf grimoire on the same day Asta was handed nothing. Yuno's wind magic is strong on its own and becomes something else entirely once Sylph bonds with him: Spirit Dive fuses mage and spirit, and Spirit of Zephyr is among the cleanest finishing techniques in the series. His win over Langris at the Royal Knights exam is his best single showing.

He sits at ten rather than higher because his demonstrated fights in the anime are almost entirely against peers rather than against captains or the Spade Kingdom. The talent is not in question, the opposition list is. For how wind sits relative to the other attributes, the magic attributes explainer covers the system properly.

#9: Fuegoleon Vermillion

Fuegoleon Vermillion, Crimson Lions captain, Fire Magic in Black Clover

Fuegoleon Vermillion

Captain of the Crimson Lion Kings and the most composed leader among the captains. His fire magic is built for control rather than spectacle, and after being critically wounded early in the series he returns bonded with Salamander, the fire spirit, which raises his output to a level few mages in the kingdom can match.

He ranks above the other squad captains here because the anime gives him a clear before-and-after: he is a strong captain, is taken out of the fight, and comes back measurably stronger with a spirit attached. That is a demonstrated power increase rather than an implied one. He is below Dante because the anime never puts them in the same fight, and Dante's devil-granted output is on another scale.

#8: Dante Zogratis

Dante Zogratis, Dark Triad, Body and Gravity Magic in Black Clover

Dante Zogratis

One of the three Dark Triad and the Spade Kingdom's ruling figure, Dante hosts a devil and fights with Body Magic for near-total regeneration alongside Gravity Magic for crushing area control. The combination is brutal: he shrugs off damage that would end a captain and applies pressure that most mages cannot move inside of. He attacks the Black Bulls base directly to take Yami.

Limited anime showing, ranked on what has been shown. The Dark Triad are formally introduced around episode 158 and the anime stops at 170, so his screen time is short. What the anime does establish is decisive in both directions: he is a devil-host operating above captain level, and Asta and Yami defeat him working together before Zenon arrives to collect both him and Yami. That loss is a real anime-canon result and it is what keeps him at eight rather than higher.

#7: Asta

Asta, Black Bulls, Anti-Magic and Devil Union in Black Clover

Asta

The only person in the cast with no mana whatsoever, which in a world sorted entirely by mana should make him irrelevant. Anti-magic inverts that: his swords cancel spells on contact, which means the stronger and more magic-dependent an opponent is, the worse the matchup gets for them. By the end of the anime he has Black Asta, the Black Divider, and Devil Union with Liebe, the form that takes him from a specialist to a genuine top-tier threat.

His placement is a matchup argument rather than a power one. Against a mage, Asta is far more dangerous than a raw-mana comparison suggests, and his share of the win over Dante is the hardest feat on his record. Against anything that does not rely on magic, he is a very fit teenager with a sword. Hard counters that scale with the opponent's strength are rare in shonen power systems; Jujutsu Kaisen's cursed techniques contain the closest structural equivalents.

#6: Yami Sukehiro

Yami Sukehiro, Black Bulls captain, Dark Magic in Black Clover

Yami Sukehiro

Captain of the Black Bulls, a foreigner who arrived in the Clover Kingdom with nothing and took a captaincy anyway. Dark Magic is a rare attribute that eats other mana, and Yami's katana work turns it into cutting techniques that ignore most defences. Dimension Slash cuts space itself. His Mana Zone control is among the best in the kingdom and he fights more comfortably against stronger opponents than weaker ones.

He ranks sixth on a pair of concrete anime results: he takes a direct share of the win over Dante, which is the best anti-Dark-Triad showing any Clover mage manages in the run, and he is then captured by Zenon, which places a clear ceiling above him. The two facts together position him precisely. He is also the reason the Black Bulls function at all, which the Season 2 refresher covers in context.

#5: Patri

Patri, Elf Tribe, Light Magic in Black Clover

Patri

The elf who led the Eye of the Midnight Sun under a borrowed name and the architect of the Elf Reincarnation arc, operating from inside William Vangeance's body. His light magic is fast in the most literal sense, attacks that travel at a speed most mages cannot react to, and he carries the grief and conviction of someone who has waited centuries to act.

Patri's anime showing is the strongest sustained antagonist performance before the Spade Kingdom appears. He fatally wounds the Wizard King, which no one else in the series manages, although he does it with an anti-magic weapon rather than by outfighting him. He then holds his own against the combined response of multiple Magic Knight squads. Ranked fifth on the breadth of what he achieves rather than on any single exchange.

#4: Mereoleona Vermillion

Mereoleona Vermillion, Crimson Lions, Fire Magic and Mana Zone mastery in Black Clover

Mereoleona Vermillion

The eldest Vermillion sibling, acting captain of the Crimson Lions, and the single most physically aggressive mage in the series. Her fire magic is channelled through her own fists rather than cast at range, and her Mana Zone is the most refined shown by any Magic Knight: she reads and reshapes ambient mana well enough to fight several opponents at once without losing control of the space.

Her Elf Reincarnation showing is the argument. She takes on multiple reincarnated elves simultaneously and keeps winning, in a stretch where individual elves are overwhelming full squads elsewhere on the map. She is repeatedly treated in-universe as the strongest active Magic Knight short of the Wizard King himself, and the anime backs that framing rather than merely asserting it.

#3: Zenon Zogratis

Zenon Zogratis, Dark Triad, Bone and Spatial Magic in Black Clover

Zenon Zogratis

The coldest of the Dark Triad and the one with the highest devil assimilation shown in the anime. Bone Magic generates spears, armour and constructs faster than most mages can counter, and Spatial Magic lets him move through a battlefield without crossing it. He fights with no visible effort and no interest in the outcome being in doubt.

Limited anime showing, ranked on what has been shown, and what has been shown is the most lopsided sequence in the run. He attacks the Golden Dawn, the kingdom's strongest squad, and defeats William Vangeance to take him. He then arrives at the Black Bulls base immediately after Asta and Yami have beaten Dante and removes both Dante and Yami without being meaningfully contested. Beating a captain decisively and then walking off with a second one is the strongest anime-canon feat on this list below the top two.

#2: Licht

Licht, Elf Tribe leader, Light and Sword Magic in Black Clover

Licht

Leader of the elf tribe and the original owner of the four-leaf grimoire that eventually reaches Asta as a five-leaf. Licht's light magic is paired with sword magic and the Demon-Slayer and Demon-Dweller blades, giving him both the raw output of a top elf and weapons built specifically to deal with devils.

He ranks second because the series positions him as the standard the elves themselves measure against, and because everything the Elf Reincarnation arc does is downstream of him. The anime is careful never to show him comprehensively beaten in a straight fight. The honest caveat is that his screen time is smaller than his stature, so this placement leans on how consistently the series frames him as the ceiling of the elf tribe rather than on a long list of exchanges.

#1: Julius Novachrono

Julius Novachrono, Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, Time Magic in Black Clover

Julius Novachrono

The twenty-eighth Wizard King and, by the anime's own repeated framing, the strongest mage in the Clover Kingdom. Time Magic is the most complete attribute in the series: Chrono Stasis stops an opponent outright, he can accelerate or rewind within his own domain, and he can store time to spend later. Nothing else shown in the anime answers it cleanly.

He is first because the only thing that brings him down is a hard counter rather than a loss. Patri strikes him with an anti-magic weapon, the one category of attack that Time Magic cannot interact with, and even then Julius survives by spending stored time, continuing in a drastically reduced child form. This ranking is of Julius at his prime, which is the version the anime treats as the kingdom's ceiling and the benchmark every captain is measured against.

Where the manga changes this list

This ranking is anime-only, and the manga has continued well past where episode 170 stopped. Several characters on this list are affected, in both directions: some gain forms or revelations that would move them up significantly, at least one has context added that reframes where their power came from, and the Dark Triad's full capability is established far more completely than the anime's dozen or so episodes allow.

No specifics here, because the point of this post is to be safe to read in premiere week. If you are anime-only, the list above reflects everything you have actually seen and nothing you have not. If you are a manga reader, you already know which four or five entries you would move and roughly how far. Season 2 will close most of that gap on its own.

Closing

Julius at his prime remains the ceiling, Licht sits at the top of the elf tribe, and Zenon is the clearest evidence that the Spade Kingdom is a different class of problem from anything the Clover Kingdom has faced. Season 2 starts on 3 October and is likely to reshuffle most of the middle of this list within its first few episodes.

For the catch-up before it starts, what to remember before Season 2 covers where the anime left off and the fastest route back. For how the magic system underpinning all of this actually works, Black Clover magic attributes explained breaks it down. And for where the season sits in the wider autumn slate, see the Fall 2026 anime season guide.
