The Strongest Swordsmen in One Piece, Ranked
People have been arguing about One Piece swordsman rankings for two decades. Who's stronger between Mihawk and Roger? Has Zoro surpassed Vista yet? Does Killer count as a swordsman or a scytheman? After the Devil Fruits ranking covered the elite tier of power systems, this post covers the other elite tier: the swordsmen who don't need a Devil Fruit because their swords are enough.
The ranking is canonical and weighted toward sword-specific combat: characters who use blades as their primary tool, not just carry one. We close with the collecting angle and which sword replicas are worth chasing if you want a piece of the wall.

How One Piece swordsmen actually rank
A few things to know if you're newer to the series. Swords in One Piece are graded as Saijou O Wazamono (Supreme Grade, 12 swords total) at the top tier, O Wazamono (Great Grade, 21 swords) next, and Ryo Wazamono (Skillful Grade, 50 swords) below that. The grade matters because legendary blades have their own histories and personalities; some are even cursed.
The other variable that changes everything is Haki. Armament Haki coats blades in invisible armour, letting them cut things normally immune to cuts (Devil Fruit users in Logia form, dragons, sea kings). Conqueror's Haki at the highest level can be infused into a sword for extra cutting power. And the Black Blade transformation, turning a regular sword permanently black through repeated Haki use, is the canonical mark of a master swordsman.
The strongest swordsmen in canon all use a Saijou O Wazamono blade with Black Blade transformation and master-level Haki. Mihawk has all three. So did Roger. So did Oden. Everyone else is climbing toward that combination.
Tier 1: The world's greatest swordsmen
The Sword Gods. Each held or holds a credible claim to "world's greatest swordsman" status at some point in canon.

Dracule Mihawk
The current titleholder. Mihawk has held the "World's Greatest Swordsman" mantle since before the series began and has not been credibly challenged in canon yet. Wields Yoru, a Black Blade Supreme Grade sword, the largest in the series. Trained Zoro during the two-year time skip. The benchmark every other swordsman is measured against.

Gol D. Roger
The Pirate King. Pure swordsman with no Devil Fruit. Dueled Whitebeard to a series-defining stalemate, fought Shiki to a draw, and was the only person Sengoku considered a real threat in the Roger era. Combined master-level Haki with a fighting style that defined an era.

Kozuki Oden
The Daimyo of Kuri. The only character in canon to wound Kaido (the legendary "Oden Wo Yui" cut that Kaido refused to ever let heal). Wielded both Enma (which now belongs to Zoro) and Ame no Habakiri simultaneously in a two-sword style. Famous for unleashing Conqueror's Haki coated cuts that drew blood from the strongest creature in the world.
Tier 2: Yonko-class swordsmen
Top-tier active or recently active swordsmen at Yonko power level.

Red-Haired Shanks
The Red-Haired Yonko fights primarily with his sword Gryphon, a Saijou O Wazamono. One of the few characters confirmed to have all three Haki types at master level. His sword duel with Whitebeard left a permanent scar across the older man's chest. Quietly considered by many fans to be top-three sword skill in the series despite spending most of his appearances doing the political work of a Yonko.

Roronoa Zoro
Current sword skill ceiling among the active generation. Wields Wado Ichimonji (his oldest blade, his late friend Kuina's sword), Enma (passed down from Oden), and Sandai Kitetsu (cursed blade, now stained black through Haki). The three-sword Santoryu style is unique to him. Post-Wano arc, Zoro is widely considered the most likely candidate to inherit Mihawk's title eventually.
Tier 3: A-tier fleet swordsmen
The elite supporting cast. Top-tier swordsmen in their respective crews, fall just short of the absolute apex.

Vista
Whitebeard's 5th Division Commander. The only fighter to credibly trade blades with Mihawk in the Marineford war (the fight ended inconclusively, which is itself a statement). Wields two long blades simultaneously, fights with elegant precision rather than raw power.

Killer
The Kid Pirates' first mate. Originally fought with twin spinning sickles. Post-Wano his blades evolved into longer scythe-form swords with extreme cutting reach. Less famous than the Yonko-tier swordsmen but maintains a credible claim to a top-10 ranking based on his Onigashima performance.

Brook
The Soul King swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates. Brook wields Soul Solid, a Saijou O Wazamono cane sword infused with his soul energy. His Three Verse Humming attack uses Soul Solid combined with his soul-based abilities. Often overlooked because of his comedic role, but his actual combat skill is comfortably top-30 in the series.
Tier 4: Sword + Devil Fruit hybrid
Special category. Characters whose swordsmanship is significant but whose Devil Fruit changes the fight more.

Trafalgar D. Water Law
Fights with Kikoku, an O Wazamono cursed sword, but his Ope Ope no Mi is the actual decisive factor in his fights. Within his Room, Kikoku can cut almost anything because of the spatial manipulation. Pure sword skill might rank him outside the top 10; his combat ability with the Devil Fruit puts him at Yonko-class.
Honourable mentions
The characters who didn't make the card list but belong in the conversation.
Edward Newgate (Whitebeard). Used the bisento, a polearm rather than a sword, but he's so iconic and so close in tier to the top three that any "strongest weapon user" discussion needs him.
Sabo. Pipe-staff weapon, not a sword. Outside the strict sword ranking but a top-tier weapon master with the Mera Mera no Mi as well.
Cavendish (Pirate Prince). A-tier flashy swordsman, ranked Worst Generation. Underrated because his appearances haven't shown the full depth of his skill.
Tashigi. Marine swordswoman, ascended quickly through the ranks. Captain Smoker's right hand for a reason.
Ryuma. Wano historical swordsman. The original wielder of Shusui, which Zoro returned to Wano during the post-Onigashima arc. Featured briefly in Thriller Bark but a legendary figure in Wano lore.
Sword collecting: what's worth chasing
For collectors, One Piece sword merchandise breaks into three categories worth knowing about.
Bandai Proplica replicas. The high-end official sword replicas. Production runs include Wado Ichimonji (Zoro), Yoru (Mihawk), Enma (Zoro current), Sandai Kitetsu (Zoro), Shusui (formerly Zoro). UK retail is £80 to £150 each from AmiAmi or Tokyo Otaku Mode. Aftermarket on retired runs (the original Yoru release) sits at £200+. The Proplica branding means full-length steel or aluminium blade with detailed handle wrap. These aren't plastic toys.
Foam and EVA replica swords. The cosplay-tier products. Often £30 to £60 from cosplay retailers like Cosknight and ProCosplay. Quality varies wildly; the best are convincing for photo work but fall apart under handling.
Display stands and wall mounts. A sword without a stand isn't displayable. Bandai-branded display stands run £30 to £60; generic katana wall mounts work for £15 to £25 if you don't care about brand match.
Bootleg warning. Sword replicas are heavily bootlegged on AliExpress and eBay UK. Real Bandai replicas come in branded boxes with weight matching the steel or aluminium blade. Bootlegs are plastic or aluminium-clad and ship in plain boxes. Same checks as the figure scams guide.
TL;DR
The strongest swordsmen in One Piece are split into tiers. Mihawk, Roger, and Oden hold the all-time apex. Shanks and post-Wano Zoro are the active Yonko-tier. Vista, Killer, and Brook are the A-tier fleet captains. Law is the sword-plus-DF hybrid category. For collectors, Bandai Proplica replicas of Wado Ichimonji, Yoru, and Enma are the chase pieces, with retired runs commanding aftermarket premiums.
